A STORY OVER A HALF CENTURY AGO - That's bad guy Jack Elam pausing between takes during shooting of the STORIES OF THE CENTURY episode, Black Jack Ketchum, in 1954. Series' co-star,  Mary Castle, and supporting player, Michael Hall, standing next to legendary action director, William Witney. STORIES OF THE CENTURY blended highly fictionalized accounts of actual old west outlaws around the central character of two-fisted, railroad detective, Matt Clark (Jim Davis). Calling upon the studio's vast library of well-staged action footage from its hundreds of westerns and serials plus more mature screenplays from Republic's reliable roster of scripters -- not to mention the studio's superb production staff and facilities -- the series was superior to most of the competing oaters on the tube at the time. Though the honor of being the "adult" western series if usually bestowed of GUNSMOKE, which debuted in 1955, an argument for that distinction could well be be made in favor of STORIES OF THE CENTURY.  So popular and well-received was the series, that it was recognized with an Emmy Award in 1955 as the "Best Western or Adventure Series." Sadly, none of Republic's subsequent television efforts received such an accolade.

THE FINAL REEL 2008

So long to favorites who have entertained and enlightened in the comfortable darkness of the

movie theatre, on the stage through song and voice or in the comfort of our living room in the

glare of television or radio's intimate ether. They will be missed.
